In Loving Memory of Pelagia Edna Lucy Pereira
11th October 1936 – 1st October 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mrs Pelagia Edna Lucy Pereira—affectionately known to all as Edna—on 1st October 2026, surrounded by the love of her family, just days shy of her 90th birthday.
Edna was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit touched everyone who knew her. A woman of deep and unwavering faith, her journey spanned Kenya and the UK, defined by friendship, community, and service to others.
In Kenya, Edna taught for over 20 years at Star of the Sea Primary School in Mombasa, where she remains fondly remembered by generations of pupils. Alongside her beloved husband Iggy, family, and friends, she embraced a vibrant life in East Africa filled with gatherings at the Goan Institute.
In 1973, Edna and Iggy moved to the UK with their two young daughters to begin a new chapter. Adapting seamlessly to a new career, Edna worked for over 15 years in the Deeds Department at Abbey National, earning high esteem and affection from colleagues for her exceptional interpersonal skills, compassion, and dedication.
Their home in Bexleyheath, “2A Sheldon,” was a welcoming haven to many, marked by colourful dahlias and the scent of roses. Together, Iggy and Edna kept Goan traditions alive and remained pillar members of their local community— organising Christmas dances, supporting the Catholic Children’s Society, co-founding the Customs Social Club, and staying active in groups like Amigos and the Anerley Eagles Club. In retirement, her greatest joy was her cherished grandchildren, to whom she gave endless love and time.
Edna bore the losses of her beloved husband Iggy and daughter Gillian with quiet strength and grace, carried always by her profound Catholic faith. Her legacy of unconditional love, generosity, and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
